Principle Automotive Group Wins Excellence in Sustainability Award from BMW North America

By Automotive Editor

SAN ANTONIO, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Principle Automotive Group is pleased to announce its receipt of the 2022 Excellence in Sustainability Award, for its Principle BMW and MINI of San Antonio location from BMW North America, given at the BMW North America National Dealer Meeting held recently in Palm Springs, California. Principle BMW and MINI of San Antonio is one of only 3 out of 370 dealerships in the nation to be recognized for its ongoing commitment to environmental and conservation stewardship by BMW North America.

The Excellence in Sustainability Award highlights best practices at dealerships across three key areas: Reducing CO2 emissions (use of renewable energy); Driving electrification (activities to promote electric mobility); and the Circular economy (recycling activities within dealership operations).

Principle BMW and MINI of San Antonio is committed to the Principle Automotive Group’s purpose, “To be a trusted and caring friend helping people move through life in a sustainable way.” In January of 2021, Principle Auto flipped the switch on a solar panel array to reduce its carbon foot print and CO2 emissions. With nearly 2,700 panels, it is one of the largest arrays on an automobile dealership in the United States. This solar power array produces more than 1.2 million kilowatt hours each year to offset 40-70% of the dealership’s electricity consumption. The BMW of North America award recognized its San Antonio dealership and Principle Automotive Group as a leader in sustainability not only in San Antonio, but in the entire North America region.

Project Statistics and Environmental Impact:

  • Array Physical Size: 70,000sq/ft+
  • Percentage of Energy Offset: 40% – 70%
  • This array offsets 2,000,000 lbs. of carbon each year.
  • It’s the amount of carbon sequestered by 1,200 acres of U.S. forests each year, or 15,000 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.

“Our Dealers throughout North America are powerful ambassadors to further strengthen the BMW brand image as a sustainability leader, and with many dealers already featuring initiatives that go above and beyond, we want to highlight their impact on our commitment to sustainability,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW NA. “More than ever, consumers are seeking to do business with brands and retail locations that share their values, and this recognition will help dealerships put a spotlight on their sustainability initiatives.”

According to Abigail Kampmann, CEO and Co-Founder of Principle Auto Group, “As a company, we are more conscience than ever before of the impact we have as a business and responsible member of the community. This project represents Principle Automotive Group’s commitment to the San Antonio community to make an investment to reduce our carbon foot print and CO2 emissions for many years into the future. We will also begin installation of solar panels at our corporate headquarter offices and at Principle Volvo Cars San Antonio in 2023.”
